A Triumph in Timber Engineering

The Oak Glulam Dome Installation at Oxford University

In a remarkable display of architectural innovation and engineering prowess, a stunning project at Oxford University has recently completed, culminating in the breathtaking installation of an oak glulam dome atop the new Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities.

Crafted by Laing O’Rourke, the oak glulam dome stands as a testament to modern timber engineering. This monumental structure not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the building but also signifies a milestone in the advancement of timber construction techniques. Its nodes are meticulously interconnected through precise mortise and tenon joints, each reinforced with screwed steel plates positioned strategically at the rear of every node.

The installation of such a complex structure required meticulous planning and execution that was conducted by the Radius Group. They provided bespoke Lift Plan documentation, specialised site personnel, and essential lifting accessories, leveraging state-of-the-art 3D modelling to calculate exact lift weights and optimise working ranges.

Prior to installation, the oak glulam dome underwent meticulous pre-assembly on the ground. This careful process involved aligning and fitting each component with precision to ensure the integrity of the final structure. Once assembled, the dome was lifted seamlessly as a single, unified unit using a custom-designed lifting frame. This bespoke frame was engineered specifically for this project, allowing for a smooth and secure elevation of the dome.

Multissec Tri-plates

At Multi-Sec, we played a key role in this ambitious project by providing Multi-Sec Tri-Plates. These plates were essential in equalising tension across multiple lifting points, ensuring the dome’s safe and precise installation. Our involvement highlights the collaborative effort and commitment to excellence that characterised every stage of this landmark project.

Following the successful installation of the dome, the project will be completed by adding toughened glazing and oak Brise Soleil. These additions will enhance both the aesthetic and functional qualities of the structure, creating a visually stunning and practically efficient architectural feature.

Our involvement in the installation of the oak glulam dome at Oxford University stands as a testament to our skill in delivering bespoke lifting solutions for unique architectural projects. We are immensely proud to have contributed to this landmark project and look forward to many more exciting ventures in the future.
